American Overture for Band was written for the United States Army Field Band in 1955 and dedicated to its conductor, Chester E. Whiting. Its driving rhythms, sweeping melodies, strong accents, and virtuosic demands characterize the work. Motifs derived from each principal theme recur throughout this work, serving to unify and challenge the listener's ear. Articulation, most notably full ensemble unison passages and double tonguing, is a central musical concept to teaching this arrangement.
