James Byron Dean (1931-1955) experienced the brightest and briefest movie career ever. In 16 months he made three movies: "East of Eden," "Rebel Without a Cause," and "Giant." Only the first had been released when he was killed in a car accident at age 24. [There is] a bronze bust of James Dean near Griffith Park Observatory in Los Angeles which is inscribed with a Greek epitaph that translates to "As summer was just beginning." From this, Daehn took the title of the piece and then chose an old British Isles folksong, "The Winter It Is Past, and the Summer's Here At Last" upon which to base his primary theme.

Due to the legato and sustained nature of this composition, young players will need to work to develop a uniform style of legato articulation and sostenuto playing. Along with rubato, this piece provides the opportunity for students to work on balance and blend at several dynamic levels and within several different groupings of instruments.

Instrumentation:  Flute and C Piccolo, Oboe, Bassoon, Eb Clarinet, Bb Clarinet 1-3, Eb Alto Clarinet, Bb Bass Clarinet, Eb Alto Saxophone 1-2, Bb Tenor Saxophone, Eb Baritone Saxophone, Bb Cornet 1-3, F Horn 1-4, Trombone 1-3, Baritone TC, Baritone BC, Tuba, Timpani, Suspended Cymbal, Glockenspiel, Vibraphone (opt.).
