"Variations on an African Hymnsong" was commissioned by and is dedicated to the Savannah High School of Performing Arts Wild Ensemble, Michael E. Hutchinson, Director and Dr. Marie A. Polite, Principal in Savannah, Georgia.

"Variations on an African Hymnsong" is based on a Nigerian folksong. Fragments of the hymnsong appear in the beginning and then the hymnsong itself is introduced at measure 45. The piece also features two polyrhythms in the percussion that are based on authentic African rhythm patterns. The first polyrhythm section begins in measure 38 and comes from another African hymn entitled "Kyrem". The second polyrhythm is based on a rhythm pattern called "Osebo" and begins in measure 69. While care should be taken to perform the piece in a festive and exciting manner, the "mysterious" section must be played with agressiveness and tension. The volume of the percussion section must be controlled so that it does not over power the wind instruments in the ensemble.

The composer would like to extend a personal thanks to Dr. Bryan Burton (West Chester University, Philadelphia, PA) and to W.J. McCutcheon (Cleveland, MS) for assisting in the research of materials for this composition.
