Festive Overture, Op. 96

Transcribed for Concert Band by Donald Hunsberger

Excerpts below are used by permission of GIA Publications, Inc., and are from "Teaching Music Through Performance in Band" - Volume 3.

The term "overture" denotes a piece of music in two or more sections that forms a solemn introduction to a ballet, opera or oratorio.  Shostakovich released the Festive Overture, Op 96 in 1954, following the premiere of his Symphony number ten.  This piece is a bright, bravura work for band that requires a great deal of control from all sections.  The music of Shostakovich all has a distinctive Russian flavor, which is also evident in this work.  Like works of Grainger and Bartok, Festive Overture does not quote folk song, but rather uses folk idioms to suggest a pre-existing folk melody. This exciting and masterful work is a wonderful way to showcase a mature band.

Instrumentation: Piccolo, Flutes, Oboes, English Horn, Bassoons, Clarinets, Saxophones, Horns, Trumpets, Trombones, Baritones, Tuba, String Bass, Percussion, Timpani.

Includes score and parts. From the Contemporary Music for Concert Band series.
