Jerry Young

Dr. Jerry A. Young is Professor Emeritus of Music at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire where he worked from 1983 to 2016. He is currently adjunct instructor of tuba at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City, Michigan.

Dr. Young's former students enjoy successful careers as music educators, in music industry and in leading orchestras and military bands in the U.S., Europe and Asia. Jerry was president of the International Tuba – Euphonium Association from 2013 – 2015 and formerly served as editor-in-chief of the Association’s quarterly journal. He is also a long-time member of the Board of Trustees for the Leonard Falcone International Euphonium and Tuba Festival held each summer at the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp.

Dr. Young's edition of the Arban Complete Method for Tuba (co-edited by Wesley Jacobs and published by Encore Music Publishing) has been the best-selling tuba method in the world for over twenty-five years. In 2007 he completed a new edition of the Kopprasch 60 Studies for Tuba, Op.6, and in 2012 he released the first and only edition of the Kopprasch 60 Studies for Tuba, Op.5 (both published by Encore Music Publishing).  Other projects done with Wesley Jacobs and Encore Music Publishing include the Preparatory Book for the Arban Complete Method. His edition of the Herbert L. Clarke Technical Studies for Trombone, Euphonium, and Tuba will be released by Potenza Music in 2022. He has published more than one hundred and fifty articles on pedagogy and philosophy of teaching and numerous music reviews in publications ranging from The Instrumentalist magazine to The American Choral Journal among many others. His most recent publication, A Practical Guide to Studio Teaching in Higher Education (written in collaboration with Professor Scott Watson of the University of Kansas) will be released by GIA Publications of Chicago early in the spring of 2022.

In 1999 Dr. Young was recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Arkansas Department of Music and was appointed a Fellow of the Fulbright Academy of the University of Arkansas. In 2010 Dr. Young was a recipient of the initial ITEA Clifford Bevan Award for Meritorious Work in Low Brass Scholarship for life-long accomplishment in scholarly research. In 2016 he was the recipient of the Orpheus Award (from Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia) for significant and lasting contributions to the cause of music in America. Young has appeared across the U.S., Europe and Japan as a soloist, chamber musician, clinician, and adjudicator.

Jerry performs with the Northern Lower Brass Quartet, Encore Winds, and Rags to Riches Ragtime Quartet, appears regularly with the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra Brass Quintet and is principal tubist with the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra and the Baroque on Beaver Music Festival Orchestra. Former faculty members at the Interlochen Arts Camp, Jerry and his wife, Dr. Barbara Young, a widely sought-after collaborative pianist, live in Leelanau County, Michigan.
