Coming Back was commissioned by the Polk County Public Schools through a grant from the Universal Orlando Foundation, Inc. for the Bartow Middle School Band, Bartow, Florida, Dawn Hardy, Director.

Coming Back was a fun piece to write in 2020. It allowed me to channel all of my want and desire for a returning to "normal" into a piece for students currently struggling to do just that. While I am sure there will be many, many works composed during 2020 that mention the pandemic and the strain it put on the creative community, this one will forever be special to me. Watching the students, through a Zoom call, perform this work in class while socially distanced with masks was an eye-opening experience. After that Zoom call, the meaning of the piece became so much more impactful to me, and that is an experience I think we as musicians relish for a lifetime.
