Description

Seaside is a work that evokes the feelings of life at the seashore. The first movement, Vitality, characterizes the immense source of life that is the ocean. Beneath the waves lies a world only partially known, with its teaming life and dynamic happenings. The second movement, Tidal Waltz, is a slow waltz with the tide and features music that recalls Erik Satie's Gymnopedies. The third movement, Surf, is an aural illustration of the waves crashing into a land mass. The piano writing features much diatonic parallelism that overtly paints the actions of waves, while the clarinet weaves melodically and rhythmically supple lines above it.
