Originally composed for B^b clarinet, SONATA (1990) was commissioned by Kelly Burke and Melissa Rose.

Formally, this work is traditional, being in three contrasting movements. The first movement involves juxtaposition of several musical themes and energetic gestures that vary widely in emotional content. The second movement pays homage to a famous work by Stravinsky, and consists of an intense clarinet line superimposed upon a stark, percussive piano part. The third movement is an invention, containing a great deal of rhythmic drive. This movement concludes with a brief coda that recalls material from the first movement.
