O sing unto the Lord, HWV 249a

Urtext edition. Vocal score edited by Gerald Hendrie and arranged by Andreas Kohs. Text in German and English

  • Based on the latest state of research of the Urtext of the Halle Handel Edition
  • Clear and easy to play piano accompaniments
  • English original text with German translation

The four Anthems* were all written in Handel's London period at the Chapel Royal. "As pants the hart" ("So wie der Hirsch nach Wasser schreit"), his fifth setting of this psalm text, the composer wrote for a charity event in March 1738 for the King's Theater at the Haymarket.

Until just before Handel's first stay in England, all the instruments except the organ were forbidden to accompany the liturgy in the Chapel Royal. Thus, the four orchestral-accompanied works also represent something like a new genre of English church music.

Instrumentation for the four Anthems:

  • HWV 249a: solo parts (AB), choir (SATB), flute, 2 oboes, 2 trumpets, strings and continuo
  • HWV 250b: solo parts (SATB), choir (SATB), oboe, strings and continuo
  • HWV 251e: Soli (SAATBB), choir (SAATBB), 2 oboes, strings and continuo
  • HWV 256b: solo parts (AB), choir (SATB), oboe, strings and continuo.

  • O sing unto the Lord (O singet unserm Herrn) HWV 249a
  • I will magnify thee (Ich will dich erhohen) HWV 250b
  • As pants the hart (So wie der Hirsch nach Wasser schreit) HWV 251e
  • Let God arise (Lasst Gott erstehen) HWV 256b
