Mozart composed the Trio in E-flat in 1786. It was first published in Vienna in 1788. The first printed edition provided a violin part as a substitute for the clarinet. The modern editions that we carry have parts for either clarinet or violin. The word "Kegelstatt" or skittle alley has to do with a game of skittles or nine pins. This nickname may actually refer to the circumstances of composing a set of 12 duets for wind instruments, K. 487, also composed in 1786. The G. Schirmer set of parts is a practical performing edition by Joseph Adamowski.
- 1. Andante
- 2. Menuetto
