Colonial Song

for Concert Band

Score compiled and edited by Timothy Topolewski

Colonial Song ranks among Percy Grainger's finest compositional efforts.  The composer said of this work:  "No traditional tunes of any kind are made use of in this piece, in which I have wished to express feelings aroused by thoughts of the scenery and people of my native land (Australia), and also to voice a certain kind of emotion that seems to me not untypical of native born Colonials in general.  I have also noticed curious, almost Italian-like musical tendencies in brass band performances and ways of singing in Australia which are also reflected here in this piece."

Instrumentation: 1st and 2nd Piccolo, 1st and 2nd Flute, 1st and 2nd Oboe, Eb Clarinet, Bb Solo Clarinet, 1st, 2nd and 3rd Bb Clarinet, Eb Alto Clarinet, Bb Bass Clarinet, Bb Contrabass Clarinet, 1st and 2nd Bassoon, Contrabassoon, Bb Soprano Saxophone, Eb Alto Saxophone, Bb Tenor Saxophone, Eb Baritone Saxophone, Bb Solo Cornet, 1st, 2nd and 3rd Bb Cornet, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th F Horn, 1st, 2nd and 3rd Trombone, Baritone BC, Baritone TC, Tuba, String Bass, Piano, Harp, Percussion, Timpani, Glockenspiel, Snare Drum, Suspended Cymbal, Gong.
