Triphony - Piano / Keyboard

In the tradition of such independent American compositional minds as Henry Cowell (with whom he studied), and John Cage, Lou Harrison (1917-2003) has explored a wide range of Western and non-Western compositional techniques, including just intonation and the use of such instruments as the gamelan and psaltery in lieu of or in conjunction with traditional Western instrumentation. Featuring sometimes spare, sometimes intense three-part counterpoint in a highly concentrated form, Triphony, composed in 1945, is the original version of a work that later became the String Trio, and in a revised, altered and enlarged form, a movement of his Suite for Symphonic Strings.
