During the classical period, composers wrote concertos as a vehicle for their virtuosity in performance. The cadenza is a space in these works where the soloist is allowed to freely improvise without any orchestral accompaniment, and it's an opportunity to stun the audience with virtuosity.

Composers wrote and published cadenzas for their concertos out of consideration for other performers too. Anyone performing an established concerto now has several options to choose from, because so many cadenzas have been written by the composer and others over the years.

This particular cadenza, composed by Paul Badura-Skoda, is intended to be used during a performance of Mozart's Concerto.
