Prelude and Fugue in B-flat major

for Concert Band Grade 3

Excerpts below are used by permission of GIA Publications, Inc and are from "Teaching Music through Performance in Band - Volume 1"

[The] original organ composition upon which this is Prelude and Fugue in C major, BWV 553. In order to keep the arrangement at Grade 3 level, [Roland] Moehlmann took the liberty of changing the key from C major to B-flat major. To avoid further confusion, the BWV number does not appear in the score.

The Prelude is composed in binary form and presents a simple motiffeaturing sequences of lower-neighbor-tone fingures. In its call-and-response character, which becomes quite obvious in the wind ensemble version, the Prelude attests to the composer's understanbding of the Italian concerto style as well as the traditional organ prelude. The fugue is quite short, presenting a six-measure subject in a four-part treatment. Despite a few liberties in the fugue, this piece is a wonderful teaching tool for Baroque-style articulaytion and phrasing as well as motivic treatment - particularly due to the simplicity of the motifs.
