Children's March "Over the Hills and Far Away" for Concert Band Revised by Frank Erickson Excerpts below are used by permission of GIA Publications, Inc., and are from "Teaching Music Through Performance In Band - Volume 1" Percy Grainger left not the slightest hint concerning the circumstances that led to the composition of Children's March. His early success as a pianist and composer brough him a substantial measure of financial confort, so he had little reason to compose in response to a commission from a wealthy benefactor. It seems much more likely that his goal in composing Children's March was to demonstrate to all open-minded musicians that the wind band was entirely worthy of status equal to the symphony orchestra as a means for musical expression of the highest order. With instrumental demands unlike any band work before its time and few since, the Children's March remains one of the most original and satisfying parts of the wind band's essential repertoire. Instrumentation: Piccolo, 1st and 2nd Flute, 1st and 2nd Oboe, English Horn, 1st and 2nd Bassoon, Eb Clarinet, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Bb Clarinet, Eb Alto Clarinet, Bb Bass Clarinet, Eb Contrabass Clarinet, 1st and 2nd Alto Saxophone, Bb Tenor Saxophone, Eb Baritone Saxophone, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Bb Cornet, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th F Horn, 1st, 2nd and 3rd Trombone, Baritone BC, Baritone TC, Tuba String Bass, Timpani, Percussion, Piano.
